Wine as a common thread

Just like all Mercure hotels, the Mercure Porto Gaia also has a common theme to unify its decor, and in this case that theme is wine. There are paintings, tiles, even museum pieces (on loan from local wineries) and sculptures, the most notable of which is by artist Paulo Neves, one of the most well-known modern sculptors of the region, with his work on display in the hotel lobby.

The hotel’s modernity matches perfectly with the historical essence of winemaking, through warm tones that are reminiscent of earth and greens that remind you of a vineyard.

Boasting four stars, it has 104 rooms, a breakfast area with stunning views and the Ports & Co restaurant serving cuisine with traditional flavours and modern aesthetics that pays special attention to matching food with the right wines to provide a gastronomic experience you won’t forget.

There is an agreement with the gym next door so guests can make free use of its facilities (including swimming pool, sauna and jacuzzi) and the hotel is also very close to the Arrábida shopping centre.

Versatile rooms

The hotel was renovated in 2021 with the idea of creating a more open and modern look. The entrance area has several points where you can check in, and there is also direct access to the restaurant. In this main space there are also several areas where you can sit, with furniture set out either for resting (with sofas and armchairs) or working with your laptop (including high tables with sockets).

In total, there are 7 different options for the room layout, with a maximum capacity of 130 peoples. All of them have excellent natural light and all the equipment required for any type of event. The most common are those in the health sector (pharmaceutical laboratories and medical training), although they also occasionally host product exhibitions (footwear and clothing brands) or training in the aesthetics sector. There are also different furniture options to adapt to the needs of each customer (with layouts for formal and informal events).

The most common room set-ups are ‘U-shaped’ or theatre style, although for product presentations a more open space with some support tables is preferred.

Vila Nova de Gaia

The hotel is located in one of the most prolific areas of Porto and very close to the city centre.

This is Vila Nova de Gaia on the south bank of the Douro River just a few kilometres away from the river’s estuary. Above all, it is known for its winemaking tradition and for being home to the cellars of some of the country’s most elegant wines – in fact, you can still see signs from the main firms established since the beginning of the 18th century here.

Just a few years ago, the WOW (World of Wine) was created, which is an entire neighbourhood where you can enjoy different experiences such as visits to museums, a range of restaurants overlooking the river, multiple shops, an exhibition space, a room for events and even a wine school.

So if you are looking for a hotel that truly connects you to the city, this has to be your best choice.
