Malta: a rich and sunny seminar with the Mediterranean Pearl

Malta: a rich and sunny seminar with the Mediterranean Pearl

With over 300 days of sunshine each year, 7000 years of history and a short flight time from anywhere in Europe, Malta is a favourite destination for events and incentive trips in the autumn and winter.

Malta doesn’t just offer a wonderful climate and a handy location near mainland Europe. Its secret weapon is a rich and mysterious history with links to the Knights of the Order of Malta. This has left it with a wealth of archaeological UNESCO World Heritage Sites. One is the Ġgantija Temples, which are older than the pyramids of Egypt! Malta also has endless spaces suitable for themed events, such as Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum with the world’s oldest architecture. This place is so exclusive, it only admits 100 people a day!

The Maltese capital, Valletta, stands on a hillside surrounded by walls concealing narrow alleys and hundreds of historic buildings. One is St John’s Co-Cathedral, which has a lavish Baroque interior that makes a unique setting for treasure hunts and events taking in the island’s history.

With its scenery, landmarks and unspoilt towns, Malta has appeared in lots of box office hits. Fort Ricasoli is one of the oldest places to have traces of civilisation and will be familiar from unforgettable moments in Troy and Gladiator. If you want to arrange an activity with a film theme, this is the place to visit!

Accessibility

The quickest way to get to Malta is by plane. Airlines fly from the UK, Ireland, France, Spain, Greece and Italy, meaning you can reach Malta in around 2-3 hours and enjoy stunning Mediterranean weather while it’s cold and wet back home. Malta Airport is 4 miles from central Valletta. Although most visitors come by plane, Malta is a popular stop for Mediterranean cruise ships. There are also ferries from southern Italy, Sicily, Genoa and Marseille.

Because the island is relatively small, you can hold events in different places without transfers being an issue.

Incentive activity ideas in Malta

Sailing around Xlendi or Dwejra Bay and enjoying a massage or cocktail is lovely and relaxing. But if you’re looking for some real fun, why not involve your group in a re-enactment of a fight between pirate ships and knights?

At Teatru Manoel, a soprano can show your group the basics of singing, or a one-person skit can be arranged. This space can hold up to 300 people and has a speciality restaurant.

Groups can cook and try some of the local specialities like rabbit with garlic and wine. “Widow’s soup” is a typical winter dish containing eggs, vegetables, noodles and cheese. Then there’s lampuki, a local fish, which is eaten all year round. To immerse yourself in Maltese culture, visit Marsaxlokk. This is one of the island’s most picturesque settlements with traditional luzzu fishing boats and a weekly market.

Finish with a sunset trip in a dgħajsa (the island’s traditional gondola-style boat). Then stay in Valletta to enjoy its vibrant nightlife.
